46 kids, oh my!

I have a really bad habit of putting posts intended for this sight onto my other tumblr.  Friday’s post didn’t quite make it up, but it was just kind of complainy, my Friday class at Sacred Heart had 46 kids in it because one of the teachers had gotten in a pretty serious car accident that Monday and the schools here don’t have the money, or resources, to hire substitutes.  As completely hectic as teaching that class was, I was glad to give the teacher who had had 46 kids in his class all week a little bit of a break (he helped me get the kids attention and quiet them down, plus 2 other students taught with me, so it was really a joint effort).  More than that, it’s made me realize some of the obstacles kids here have to deal with at school.  Even though they have schools available, the schools don’t have a lot of resources (think computers, books), a lot of the kids don’t have school supplies, several have problems seeing the board and don’t have glasses, and the classrooms have no AC, just a ton of open windows to keep the breeze in, which somewhat works, but also makes for a lot of distractions.  Plus, they’re 11 year old kids, I can’t really blame them for not wanting to learn “business math,” I hate math, too.

This weekend was really great, we went to Placencia.  I’ll post some pictures tomorrow after community day!  Tomorrow morning I’m getting up around 7 to go running with my roomies, then we have community day from around 9:00 to 4:00, it should be a really good time.

Also, I survived my 2nd earthquake!  It was really just an aftershock, it only lasted about 10 seconds and was nothing compared to the one last week.

Okay— I’m going to bed, will post tomorrow as long as the internet is still working (you really never know), good night!
