Good morning Belize!

It’s 6 AM, and I’m up working on POWA stuff and having my quiet time— partly because it’s really bright outside this early, partly because our whole room forgot about the time change and thought it was 7 AM, and partly because I found out my meeting with Michelle Irving, the head of POWA, is today and not tomorrow. The business group is doing weekly seminars with POWA (a local women’s org) on business things, naturally, mainly geared towards budgeting, running a small business, and internet resources. I’m really excited to meet the women, our first seminar will be Wednesday.

Also, the original intention of this blog was to post pictures, but the internet in my room is pretty slow, and after about 15 minutes of waiting for picture posts to work I get an error message. I plan on going to one of the internet cafes sometime this week, so hopefull I’ll be able to post pictures and skype from there. That’s about it, no bug bites or sun burns so far.

There was a moment last night when the air conditioning and fans shut out in our room for about an hour- I think it’s to conserve electricity. We just all woke up and were SO confused, it was kind of funny.

Oh, and roommates! I’m rooming with Elizabeth and Hannah, Elizabeth is working with the literacy group but also helping business, and Hannah is social work. The rooms are interconnected, so we’re connected to Claire and Melissa, both of whom are in the business group. I’ll try to update later today.

This morning we’re getting breakfast and then going to orientation in Steadfast, a town about a half hour outside of Dangriga. The Steadfast Women’s Org is making us lunch as a way to thank us for being here! After that I have meeting with Michelle Irving, and there are meetings with community members about a park they want built. Then lesson plans, we’re teaching economics and math in the schools on Tuesday and have a lot to do. Busy day, but I’m excited!
